Invictus Games

The word ‘Invictus’ is Latin for ‘unconquered’ and embodies the fighting spirit of our wounded, injured and ill servicemen and women. They have been tested and challenged, but they have not been overcome. They have proven that by embracing each other and the support of family and friends, they can reclaim their future. They are Invictus.

The precision and skill of competitors, combined with the exacting standards of the competition, makes archery one of the most exciting Invictus Games sports. The aim of archery is to shoot arrows as close to the centre of a target as possible. The objective is to hit the centre of the target, making archery a test of accuracy, concentration and strength. Individual novice, recurve and compound events will be offered at the Invictus Games Sydney 2018, with separate events for men and women. A mixed team competition, consisting of three archers per team, will also be contested. Competitors are permitted to shoot from a sitting or standing position, depending on their ability.

Athletics is one of the most popular sports of the Invictus Games. Track events demand both speed and endurance, and cover distances from 100 to 1500 metres, as well as the 4 x 100m mixed and women’s relays. Field events include discus, shot put and long jump, which is making its Invictus Games debut at Sydney. Competitors of all abilities may participate, including those competing in wheelchairs, with prostheses, or under the guidance of a sighted person known as a guide. Events are divided by the functional categorisation of the competitors with separate events for men and women.

John Russell Australia’s French impressionist

Discover the Sydney artist at the heart of impressionism

Part of the French avant-garde of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, John Russell was a close friend of Vincent van Gogh and Auguste Rodin, taught impressionist colour theory to Henri Matisse and dined with Claude Monet. Yet history has largely forgotten Russell, who was a key member of this ground-breaking group of artists during one of the most exhilarating periods in art history.

Bringing together 120 paintings, drawings and watercolours – including a number of works by his contemporaries – this major retrospective is the first survey of Russell’s work in 40 years. It offers fresh perspectives on French impressionism, reintroducing Russell’s extraordinary painting to today’s audiences.

The exhibition presents the breadth of Russell’s art from his studies in London and Paris, through impressionism and experimentation with pure colour, to his later fauve-like luminous watercolours. It features significant works that were only rediscovered recently and are exhibited publicly for the first time.

Many of the works – which include loans from the Van Gogh Museum, Musée d’Orsay, Musée Rodin, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Harvard Art Museums and public and private collections in Australia, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom – have not been shown for decades and some never before.

Many of our most well known and loved works from the Art Gallery of NSW collection are on display in the Australian galleries.

Within our magnificent Grand Courts, you’ll find key names in art history.
